This security message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Cambodia that the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh will be closed for routine Consular services on June 2. Both major political parties have announced plans for pre-election processions and rallies throughout the city. This will likely result in large crowds, traffic disruptions and road closures in Phnom Penh city center. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid central Phnom Penh if possible on June 2.
The Embassy encourages U.S. citizens to avoid large crowds and immediately vacate any area where crowds are gathering. Although recent political gatherings in Cambodia have been largely nonviolent, even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence without warning. You should exercise caution in areas of large crowds and leave the area if you are concerned for your safety.
You should remain alert to local security developments by monitoring local news reports, be vigilant regarding your personal security and preparedness, be aware of your surroundings, and plan your activities accordingly.
