Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Paris (France), Demonstration in Paris

French authorities have informed the U.S. Embassy in France that demonstrations in response to the U.S. Presidential inauguration are expected to occur near the U.S. Embassy in Paris on Friday, January 20, 2017. Local authorities anticipate the protestors will gather at 3:00pm at Place de la Concorde in the 8th arrondissement. There will be significant police presence to ensure public safety. You should exercise an appropriate level of security and situational awareness if you are in the vicinity of the U.S. Embassy, Place de la Concorde.

The Embassy has also been monitoring social media sites and note there have been calls for additional demonstrations in Paris as well as other cities in France. While we do not anticipate violence, U.S. citizens are encouraged to monitor local media and social media sources for the possibility of additional demonstrations.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
