Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Hong Kong (China), Large Gathering

The U.S. Consulate General advises all U.S. citizens that public meetings and a related public procession are being planned in Hong Kong for the late afternoon/early evening of November 8, 2016, between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The public meetings will be held near the Hong Kong High Court on Supreme Court Rd and the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal by Statue Square, while the public procession will be mainly along Queensway/Des Voeux Road Central. Organizers estimate that there will be as many as 1,500 participants, although the actual number could vary.

In general, the Consulate urges U.S. citizens to avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings as even peaceful demonstrations can turn confrontational. Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.
