Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Bujumbura (Burundi), Planned Peaceful Marches Throughout Burundi

The U.S. Embassy has received information that peaceful marches are being planned throughout Burundi for tomorrow, Saturday, June 3. Most events will be in the morning hours and done by early afternoon, but there may be separate but related events occurring all day.

In Bujumbura, the events may cause intermittent traffic disruption and/or road closures during the morning hours. Demonstrators will likely assemble in or move towards Centre-Ville, possibly pausing at multiple locations. Traffic patterns, if affected, are expected to return to normal by early afternoon.

Even events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. The U.S. Embassy is advising citizens to avoid areas where the gatherings are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings -- including local events -- and monitor local news stations for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
