Kiambu: As the world marks Nurses Week 2025 this month, communities across Kiambu County came out in their numbers to honor the dedication, compassion, and resilience of the profession that has offered to mankind over the years.
According to Kenya News Agency, the event this year, themed ‘Nurses Making a Difference,’ was graced by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, county health officials, representatives from the National Nurses Association of Kenya, and medical students from various institutions in the county.
Nurses from across the county shared moving personal experiences, highlighting both the rewards and emotional toll of their profession, thus calling for improved working conditions, better staffing, and investment in continuous professional development.
Speaking at the event, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi pledged to provide more hospital beds in public health facilities in the county, especially in the maternity sections, where there was an acute shortage. ‘I’ll do my best to balance the health care services around Kiambu and make it the best,’ he remarked.
The county boss added that the state of healthcare has been up the ladder compared to older times when healthcare facilities lacked basic necessities to offer.
As of last year, the County Government of Kiambu has been actively addressing nursing staff shortages through recent recruitment and infrastructural investments.
The Health Director Monica Kang’ethe urged the governor to look into promotion issues affecting nurses. ‘There are a number of nurses who received promotions, and there are those who missed out,’ she said. ‘We are requesting that those who are qualified and those who have gone back to school be recognized and allowed to start progressing in their new designated positions.’
‘Personally, as a student, I think this event means coming together with the registered nurses and getting the motivation and getting to know what’s next after school,’ stated Brenda Kalombi, a student at the Kiambu Level Five Hospital. This shows how important the event is in shaping and inspiring future generations of healthcare professionals.
Kiambu County plans to recruit over 1,000 additional healthcare professionals before the end of the year, including nurses, doctors, and clinical officers, to further increase healthcare services around the country.
