Government Ensures Safety of GMO Products for Public Consumption

Busia: The government, through the National Biosafety Authority, has assured the public of the safety of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) products, affirming that they are safe for consumption. The Authority’s Acting CEO, Nehemiah Ng’etich, communicated this assurance after visiting the Busia One-Stop Border Post alongside the Board of Directors.

According to Kenya News Agency, Ng’etich highlighted that the government has implemented measures to ensure GMO products’ safety, aligning with international standards and the Biosafety Act. He emphasized that GMOs undergo rigorous risk assessments to ensure their safety, comparable to conventional products. Currently, BT cotton is the only GMO product approved for production in the country, with other products like BT maize, cassava, and a potato variety in the approval process.

Ng’etich also addressed concerns about misinformation regarding GMOs, indicating that public awareness initiatives are being launched to educate the population on the importance and safety of these products. Josphat Muchiri, the Ag. Director of Biosafety Research and Compliance, reinforced the CEO’s statements, highlighting Kenya’s robust regulatory system for overseeing GMOs, guided by international protocols and national policies.

Asteria Angolo from the Authority reiterated the commitment to ensuring citizens’ safety by adhering to regulatory standards before GMO products reach the market. Meanwhile, Florence Atieno, chairperson of the Busia Women Cross Border Traders Association, urged the authority to harmonize policies with neighboring countries and increase sensitization efforts to aid cross-border trade and better public understanding of GMO products.
