Ethiopia Rejects Statement Issued by Arab League on Country’s Recent Agreement with Somaliland

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) rejected the statement the Arab League and Egypt's Foreign Minister issued on the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Ethiopia signed with Somaliland. It is to be recalled that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Muse Bihi Abdi signed a MoU for partnership and cooperation between Ethiopia and Somaliland in Addis Ababa on January 1, 2024. In a press briefing he gave to journalists today, Spokesperson of the ministry, Ambassador Meles Alem responded to questions put to him from the media regarding the statement the Arab League and Egypt's Foreign Ministry issued on Ethiopia's agreement with Somaliland for sea outlet. In this regard, the statement of the Arab League and the Egyptian Foreign Minister is unacceptable, Meles said. He added that the statement proved that the Arab league has shown contempt for Africa and undermines the principle of African solutions to African problems. The statement of the League on Ethiopia is not for the first time, he said. It is not a shame for Ethiopia to raise the issue of access to the sea as many countries have ports in Somaliland, he noted. Egypt's Foreign Minister's statement accusing Ethiopia has become source of instability in region is also a fabrication and unhelpful, he said, adding that Ethiopia is a country that has worked hard for peace and stability of the region. Ambassador Meles further stated that Egypt's statement was not helpful compared to the long standing bilateral relations between the two countries. On the other hand, the diplomatic week and exhibition at Science Museum has continued to draw a number of visitors from all different walks of life and it is meeting the objectives of the ministry to make the public understand the rich diplomatic history of Ethiopia and appreciate the role that the ministry has continued to play in advancing the country's interests, Meles said. He also mentioned that the exhibition shows the success and challenges of Ethiopia's current multilateral and bilateral diplomat ic activities. The exhibition raises the awareness of the public about Ethiopia's multilateral and bilateral relations, the ambassador noted. Ethiopian ambassadors from across the globe, heads of missions and officials of the ministry have also been attending annual meeting and discussed current issues. Speaking on the Davos World Economic Forum, Ambassador Meles Alem, said that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen is participating in the Forum which aims to discuss current geo-Political issues that need the attention of World leaders and wealthy individual State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Misganu Arga is also participating in the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Kampala, Uganda.
