WHO recommends new name for monkeypox

Monkeypox will now be known as mpox, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday, in the wake of reports of racist and stigmatizing language surrounding the name of the disease.

The decision follows a series of consultations with global experts.

Both terms will be used simultaneously for a year before the monkeypox name is phased out.

“This serves to mitigate the concerns raised by experts about confusion caused by a name change in the midst of a global outbreak,” the UN agency said in a statement.

Concern and change

Mpox is a rare viral disease that primarily occurs in tropical rainforest areas of Central and West Africa, but outbreaks emerged in other parts of the world this year.

There have more than 80,000 cases, and 55 deaths, with 110 countries affected.

When the current outbreak expanded, WHO both observed and received reports of racist and stigmatizing language online, in other settings and in some communities.

“In several meetings, public and private, a number of individuals and countries raised concerns and asked WHO to propose a way forward to change the name,” the agency said.

Naming new diseases

The monkeypox name was given in 1970, some 12 years after the virus that causes the disease was discovered in captive monkeys.

This was before WHO first published best practices on naming diseases in 2015.

These guidelines recommend that new disease names should aim to minimize unnecessary negative impacts on trade, travel, tourism or animal welfare.

They should also avoid offending any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups.

Consultative process

WHO assigns names to new and, very exceptionally, existing diseases, through a consultative process.

Medical and scientific experts, representatives from government authorities from 45 countries, as well as the general public, were invited to submit their suggestions.

Based on the consultations, and further discussions with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the agency has recommended adoption of the mpox synonym.

Considerations included rationale, scientific appropriateness, extent of current usage, pronounceability, usability in different languages, absence of geographical or zoological references, and the ease of retrieval of historical scientific information.

WHO will adopt the term mpox in its communications, and encourages others to follow suit.

Fire ravages 34.2 sqkm of Mount Kilimanjaro ecosystem

DAR ES SALAAM— A TOTAL of 34.2 square kilometres of Africa’s rooftop has been destroyed by the raging fire that erupted on the mountain for the last year.

This is equivalent to 1.9 per cent of the total area of Mount Kilimanjaro National Park ecosystem which spans 1,712 square kilometers.

Tanzania National Parks Conservation Commissioner, William Mwakilema, told reporters here that the fire’s outbreak on the Mountain had left behind a trail of destruction, with the wealth of vegetation on Africa’s Highest bearing the most brunt.

“The most affected plants in the fires include Erica sp., Protea sp., Kniphonia thomsonii, Herichrysum sp, grasses, Bracken ferns, Myrica salicifolia, Lobelia deckenii, mountain gladiolus and Senecio kilimanjarica,” disclosed the Conservation Commissioner while giving a summary update on the wildfire that swept through the Mountain.

Apart from the vegetation, the fire didn’t spare slow moving mammals such as herpatofauna, snakes, dick dicks, lizards and rodents.

Much as the fire has been contained, Mwakilema was quick to point out the lack of expertise and experience of battling mountain fires as one of the key reasons, delaying putting out the fire and result to the inferno spreading to other areas as well.

“Most of the firefighters weren’t experienced enough, especially in high altitude areas,” he said.

According to the TANAPA boss, some areas hugely affected by the wildfire weren’t easy for the firefighters to reach on time, forcing authorities to call off the exercise.

Mwakilema noted that the area was synonymous with windstorms, which can be a major cause of the fire to even spread further.

“The gaping ravines in Karanga, Baranco, Umbwe, Lyamungo and Mweka dealt us a huge blow in containing the blaze,” he recalled.

The TANAPA Conservation Commissioner suggested that the fire was as a result of human activities on top of the mountain, adding that the conservation agency was teaming up with security organs in bringing to book those behind the wildfire.

Mt Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, about 4,900 metres from its base, and 5,895 metres above sea level, making it one of the seven summits.

Rising majestically above the African plains, the 19,341-feet mountain has beckoned to climbers since the first recorded summit in 1889. It is one of the continent’s magnificent sights and has three main volcanic peaks, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.

15 African countries set for launch of Single African Air Transport Market

DAKAR (Senegal)— After minimal progress since its launch in January 2018, the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) appeared to reach a decision this week with 15 of the 35 signatory states launching a cluster to pilot the scheme in real life.

The announcement is a major boost to the proposed joint airline by Kenya Airways and South African Airways, which will have immediate and unlimited access to key markets on the continent as both countries will be participating in the trial runs.

It is also a signature achievement for the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which has been working behind the scenes to get SAATM off the ground in 2023.

Dubbed the SAATM Pilot Implementation Project, the landmark decision – which bands together some of Africa’s more significant air transport markets – was announced on Nov 14 by the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC).

Meeting in Dakar, Senegal, to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Yamoussoukro Decision, ministers from Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, South Africa, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo and Zambia, agreed to launch SAATM flights between their territories.

Comoros Security Court Sentences Ex-President to Life in Prison

A court in Comoros, the island nation off Mozambique, has found former President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi guilty of treason for selling passports to people from the Middle East.

A state security court in Comoros gave a life sentence to former President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi.

Sambi is charged with treason and the court said it found him guilty of selling Comorian passports to people in Gulf countries.

The sixty-four-year-old was not present in the court. He boycotted the hearing last week, claiming he would not get a fair trial.

Jon Fermon, a lawyer representing Sambi, termed the trial and the ruling illegal.

“The case should have been stopped. If the case went on, at least it should have been brought before a regular court established according to the law, which was not the case. If it was brought before a regular court established according to the law, it’s obvious for me President Sambi should be acquitted because there is not a piece of evidence,” he said.

Sambi has spent four years in jail for corruption.

The prosecution said the former president embezzled millions of dollars for the sale of passports to foreigners.

Fermon says they will take the case to the international forum to seek justice for Sambi.

“We will have to take this to the international scene,” he said. “There is no other choice than to take this out of Comoros and try to get it to the international attention for this case with U.N. bodies in Geneva with the French justice system, to which we will submit the question of this attempt buy a false witness statement… because there is no possibility to appeal the decision under Comorian law. So, there is no other choice than to go beyond Comoros to continue the struggle for justice for President Sambi.”

One of the defendants, Bashar Kiwan, a French-Syrian businessman, accused the current Comorian government led by President Azali Assoumani of pressuring him to testify against Sambi in exchange for a pardon. The presidency denies the claim.

Sambi, after leaving power, was placed under house arrest for disturbing public order. He ruled the Indian ocean nation from 2006 to 2011.

As estatísticas de jatos privados indicam uma frota global de 21.929 aeronaves registradas.
