Ouagadougou: Burkinabe Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo on Saturday called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to “make history” by initiating a profound reform of the organization to restore its credibility and effectiveness.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo addressed the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting the pressing need for transformation within the organization. He drew parallels between the current state of the UN and the defunct League of Nations, pointing out the organization’s inability to impose its voice, enforce its principles and resolutions, resolve conflicts, and meet contemporary challenges.
In a direct appeal to Secretary-General Guterres, the Burkinabe Prime Minister emphasized the opportunity and responsibility to transform the UN fundamentally. Ouedraogo conveyed the global support that Guterres has in this mission, despite facing various pressures and power dynamics within the international arena.
Ouedraogo concluded his address by expressing confidence in Guterres’s ability to liberate the United Nations from its current constraints and align it with the collective ambitions for a world organization that ensures international peace and security. He emphasized the need for the UN to be more than an instrument of power for the strongest nations, advocating instead for an institution that serves the interests of all global citizens.
