Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Tbilisi (Georgia), Oct 4 Bombing & Oct 5 Demonstration

U.S. Embassy Tbilisi informs U.S. citizens that on the evening of October 4, 2016 a car bomb exploded in front of the office of the political party United National Movement (UNM) on Kolmeurne Square, near Rustaveli Avenue and Freedom Square.

A political rally/march of the United National Movement (UNM) political party is expected to take place in downtown Tbilisi and will start at Rose Revolution Square and proceed along Rustaveli Ave. toward Freedom Square beginning at 4:00 p.m. on October 5, 2016 and will last approximately four hours. The U.S. Embassy recommends U.S. citizens avoid the areas between Rustaveli Avenue and Rose Revolution Square, and Freedom Square between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on 5 October. U.S. citizens staying at hotels in this area should consider remaining in place during this timeframe.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. (Please See Security Notice 0416, dated October 03, 2016)
