Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Pretoria (South Africa), Demonstration on Monday, July 17

The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria would like to inform all U.S. citizens of demonstrations scheduled for Monday, July 17, 2017, in the City of Tshwane, as reported by local media. According to media reports, more than 3,000 private security guards have threatened to make Tshwane ungovernable after contracts with their companies were terminated. The numbers of demonstrators is unknown at this time, but large crowds are expected. Serious traffic disruptions are expected within the Pretoria CBD along Pretorius Street. Expect road closures and traffic delays in all the affected areas.

U.S. citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests.
