Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Lisbon (Portugal), Explosives Used in Recent ATM Robberies

U.S. Embassy Lisbon informs U.S. citizens that since October 5, 2016 we have received reports that an unknown group of still at large criminals have robbed four ATMs using explosives: two in Lisbon, one in Cascais, and one in Alfragide. All of the attacks have occurred between 1:00 - 5:00 a.m., and none of the attacks resulted in injuries.

Embassy Lisbon reminds U.S. citizens to avoid using ATMs in isolated or poorly-lighted areas, use ATMs when accompanied by a companion, and use indoor, bank-affiliated ATMs whenever possible. U.S. citizens also should review their personal security plans, remain aware of their surroundings, monitor local news for updates, maintain a high level of vigilance, and take appropriate steps to enhance their personal security.
