Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Juba (South Sudan), Increase in Crime

The U.S. Embassy wishes to inform U.S. citizens of an increase in criminal incidents throughout South Sudan. Hotels, international residential compounds, and occasionally host nation facilities have been targets of criminal acts throughout the country. In Juba and other large cities in South Sudan, there continue to be multiple instances of armed robberies at compounds. Although not common, some robberies have been violent in nature.

There is also an increase in the number of roadblocks primarily during the hours of darkness and a pattern of vehicles being stopped by groups or individuals who then demand payment from the occupants before allowing them to proceed. Events of this type against UN/NGOs as well as local citizens are becoming frequent both in Juba and other parts of the country.

Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
