Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Dili (Timor-Leste), Police Identification Checkpoints

The National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) are instituting periodic checkpoints to check the identification of foreign nationals to ensure they are legally in Timor-Leste and have not overstayed their visa. The U.S. Embassy also understands that PNTL officers are approaching foreign nationals on the street and are asking for identification.

The U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens and their family members carry a photocopy of the biographical page of their passport along with a photocopy of the most recent entry stamp rather than carry their passports with them. The U.S. Embassy recommends that citizens secure their passport in a safe location.

If you are detained by the PNTL for not having acceptable identification, please call the U.S. Embassy at +670-332-4684, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The after-hours emergency number for U.S. citizens is +670-7723-1328. PNTL is required to provide consular notification of arrests.
