Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Bamako (Mali), Planned Demonstration in Bamako

The U.S. Embassy wishes to inform U.S. citizens of a planned demonstration scheduled to take place in Bamako on September 21. The rally will begin at 8:00 a.m. near the Place de l'Independence, proceed east down Avenue de l'Yser, and end near the French embassy. The demonstration, organized by the Coalition Patriotique pour le Mali (CPM) and Reseau Joko ni Maaya, is expected to be a peaceful expression of support for Mali's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
