Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Ankara (Turkey), Upcoming Political Gatherings, Rallies and Demonstrations

Numerous large gatherings and rallies, many of a political nature, are expected to be held throughout Turkey in late March and April. U.S. Mission Turkey recommends that U.S. citizens avoid all gatherings due to the potential for violence or personal injury. Specific locations and dates of these gatherings are being announced via traditional and social media.

Demonstrations and large events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Under the current state of emergency, participation in illegal gatherings, protests, and/or demonstrations can result in detention or arrest. We advise U.S. citizens to avoid all gatherings, protests, or demonstrations in Turkey, regardless of their purpose, and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of these kinds of events. Develop and review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, monitor local news stations for updates, and follow local authority instructions.
