The U.S. Embassy has received reports from Jordanian authorities of demonstrations and resulting police activity in Wadi Musa and Petra. The demonstrations on the night of May 27 included rock throwing, burning tires, and temporary road closures. The Jordanian police are taking steps to calm the situation.
In response to these incidents, Jordanian security officials may temporarily block travel toward Petra and Wadi Mousa from the Desert Highway. Americans should remain alert to their surroundings and follow guidance from security and tourism officials.
?U.S. citizens are reminded to avoid areas where demonstrations are ongoing. Spontaneous and/or planned demonstrations occur in Jordan from time to time in response to world events or local developments. We remind U.S. citizens that protests intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. As always, please be aware of your surroundings and monitor local media.
