Schools Directed to Shift Procurements to Government Digital Portal

Kakamega: All public schools have been directed to shift their procurement process to the Government digital portal, popularly known as E-procurement (EGP), whenever they source goods and services. Speaking at Esumeyia Secondary School in Kakamega County, Basic Education Principal Secretary Amb. Prof Julius Bitok emphasized the need for schools to transition to the new system, highlighting that it will enhance accountability.

According to Kenya News Agency, Amb. Bitok stated, “Schools are public entities and as such, they will move with other arms of government to the E-procurement portal (EGP).” He also addressed issues related to discipline in public schools, noting that numerous cases are being reported that contravene school regulations.

Amb. Bitok outlined concerning behaviors, specifically mentioning that corporal punishment and sexual harassment will not be tolerated in schools. He disclosed that he has dispatched officers to Marsabit to investigate an alleged incident of corporal punishment at a local school. Once the facts are verified, legal action will follow. The PS’s stance against outdated disciplinary methods like corporal punishment was well-received by learners, who also opposed the reintroduction of caning.

Regarding reports of sexual molestation in schools, Amb. Bitok assured that investigations would be expedited to enable relevant agencies to take prompt action. He was accompanied by two other Principal Secretaries, Dr. Caroline Wanjiru Karugu, PS East Africa Affairs, and Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, PS for Higher Education.
