Kenya’s Evangelical Leaders Commend President for Constituting IEBC Panel

Nairobi: The Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK) has commended the selection panel on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for constituting the IEBC under challenging circumstances. President William Ruto has nominated Erastus Edung Ethekon as the new chairperson, along with six commission members, who are awaiting approval by the National Assembly.

According to Kenya News Agency, EAK General Secretary Rev. Kepha Nyandega, during a media briefing in Nairobi, urged the National Assembly to reconvene to complete the approval process due to the urgency of the commission’s work. He emphasized the alliance’s commitment to collaborating with the commission to help them fulfill their mandate. Rev. Nyandega called on Kenyans to remain hopeful and united, despite the country’s challenges, and encouraged them to stand for justice.

Rev. Nyandega also expressed concerns about increasing extrajudicial killings by security agencies and resource-related conflicts in the country. He highlighted studies indicating that boundary issues could pose significant conflict risks ahead of the 2027 elections. The EAK aims to facilitate conflict prevention and mitigation through dialogue and mediation.

Furthermore, Rev. Nyandega addressed the country’s fiscal challenges, pointing out the unsustainable public debt and the impact of taxation on businesses and unemployment. He urged the President to consult with various stakeholders, including the Church, and convene a National Restoration Convention to address these pressing issues.
