Justice Ministry Stresses Need for Swift Action to Prevent Growing, Complicated Human Trafficking

Swift and inclusive prevention works are highly needed to prevent the ever-growing and complicated crimes in human trafficking, according to Ministry of Justice.

Opening the discussion forum organized to deliberate on the Draft Strategy for the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Persons today, Justice State Minister Alemante Agidew said the national strategy aims to prevent the ever-increasing and complicated crimes in human trafficking that is affecting the rights of citizens and the country’s economic growth at large.

The new national draft strategy would enable to take swift prevention and controlling works that are highly needed to prevent human trafficking, he added.

Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Zelalem Mengiste said the strategy will create better capacity for the federal police to enhance the ongoing encouraging efforts in identifying major human traffickers and major routes.

Preventing the three main human trafficking routes --- South Africa, Middle East and Europe, in collaboration with other countries will be instrumental in the fight against human trafficking, he added.

Presenting the draft strategy, National Partnership Coalition for Migration Secretariat Head Abrham Ayalew said many Ethiopian citizens are paying huge sacrifice, including their lives, misguided by illegal brokers, human traffickers and sophisticate criminal networks.

To prevent and control such severely damaging crimes, planning together and working together as well as moving in a more coordinated manner is instrumental, he stressed.
