Gov’t Taking Initiatives, Actions to Combat Effects of Climate Change: Planning and Dev’t State Minister

Addis Ababa: Ethiopia is demonstrating commitment and determination to implement global agreements on combating the effects of climate change through various initiatives like the Green Legacy Initiative, Planning and Development State Minister Seyoum Mekonen said.

Addressing the Forty-sixth Meeting of the Least Developed Countries Expert Group at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Headquarters in Addis Ababa today, the state minister noted that Ethiopia has been undertaking concrete actions from policies, strategies, and long-term plans at all levels to respond to the ever increasing impacts of climate change.

For him, Ethiopia is leading by example in the fight against climate change, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to global agreements through initiatives like the Green Legacy Initiative.

‘Ethiopia’s commitment to reforestation and land restoration through initiatives like the Green Legacy Initiative demonstrate our determination to combat climate change and protect our ecosystem,’
Seyoum said.

As part of the Green Legacy Initiative, the expert group joined the state minister and partners in planting saplings at the UNECA Headquarters compound.

This symbolic gesture underscores Ethiopia’s dedication to combating the effects of climate change, particularly in the context of the upcoming national tree-planting campaign where 600 million saplings are set to be planted in a single day.

Since 2019, Ethiopia has made significant strides in reforestation, planting over 32 billion saplings. This ambitious effort aligns with the government’s priority of building a green economy and ensuring climate resilience.

According to the state minister, the country’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and other global partnerships further solidifies its position as a leader in climate action.

The Green Legacy Initiative offers multiple benefits, including watershed management, carbon reduction, and environmental conservation, he added.

It also serves as a model for other countries seeking to address t
he challenges posed by climate change.
