Addis Ababa: The European Union will continue to strengthen its support for Ethiopia with the view to expanding medical specialization, EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner Dr. Stella Kyriakids said.
The commissioner visited today the oncology, psychiatry, cardiology, and feto-maternal departments of Tekur Anbassa Specialized Hospital.
On the occasion, Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse said that the visit is part of the Joint European Initiative to strengthen Medical specialization in Ethiopia, which has been implemented from 2023 to 2025.
According to her, the project has been implemented in 9 universities, including Tekur Anbassa Specialized Hospital.
The hospital has been expanding various specialties in the past years, in collaboration with various partners like the European Union, she said.
She also acknowledged the partnerships and expressed her hope that the visit will enable to enhance collaboration and diversify to the next level of partnership areas.
EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner Dr. Stella Kyriakids said on her part that EU is extending support to improve cancer treatment, mental health, and maternal health, among others.
According to her, the EU will continue its support in training and medical equipment, among others.
"We have been putting health at the very core of the partnership as a European Union with African union and as well as with Ethiopia."
The Joint European Initiative to strengthen Medical specialization in Ethiopia is a project of the of the Spanish Agency for International Development cooperation (AECID), the Italian Agency for the Development Cooperation (AICS), and the European Union.
The initiative aims to support the capacity of the Ethiopian health system to recover from conflict and crisis, making it more resilience to further shocks, it was learned.
