Ethiopia Secures 140 Million USD from Energy Export in Concluded EFY


Addis Ababa: Ethiopia has secured 140 million USD from energy export in the concluded Ethiopian Fiscal Year, registering 16 percent increase compared to the previous year, the Ethiopian Electric Power said today.

Briefing journalists on the annual performance of the Ethiopian Electric Power today, EEP CEO Ashebir Balcha said that 27 million USD was obtained from energy provision to data mining.

EEP plans to generate over 260 million USD from energy export in this 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year.

Speaking of expanding energy export, Ashebir revealed that energy transmission test to Tanzania is expected to start next month.

The CEO pointed out that local energy demand has increased by 17 percent as compared to the previous year.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) generated 17 percent of the total energy from only 2 of the 13 turbines in the EFY, the CEO said.

With additional energy to be generated from GERD this Ethiopian fiscal year, the energy production will boost domestic supply.

Of the total ener
gy produced by Ethiopian Electric Power, Gibe III, GERD, and Tana Belese generated 34, 17 and 9.6 percent respectively, Ashebir said.

Furthermore, the CEO elaborated that 96 percent and 33 percent of the energy was generated from hydro and wind, respectively, while waste energy contributed 0.2 percent.
