Ethiopia Joins World Skills International


Addis Ababa: Labor and Skills Minister Muferiat Kamil announced Ethiopia’s membership of World Skills International.

WorldSkills is an international organization that organizes world and national championships for vocational skills that is held every two years in different parts of the world, and also hosts conferences about vocational skills.

In her media briefing today, the Minister said Ethiopia’s membership has been accepted by world Skills International following the efforts made over the past two years to fulfill the requirements.

WSI will officially announce Ethiopia’s membership during its general assembly in September, she revealed.

Ethiopia’s membership to WSI most significantly provides an opportunity for the country’s youth to participate at the World Skills Competitions which is held every two years in different parts of the world.

Muferiat said the membership provides several economic and social significances for Ethiopia and its youth in terms of skill transfer, experience exchange, indust
ry linkages among others.

This enables Ethiopian youths to foster their skills by taking experience in various fields at international level, she added.

According to the minister, Ethiopian youths are expected to participate at the upcoming WorldSkills Competition in the areas of furniture, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine production and ICT.

Ethiopia’s membership underlines the country’s commitment to improving its TVET system as outlined in its national skills strategy.

So far some 10 African countries including Ethiopia have joined the world Skills International (WSI), it was indicated.

With its 88 Members, WorldSkills connects two thirds of the world’s population.

The upcoming 2024 WorldSkills Competition will be held in September in Lyon, France, it was learned.
