Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens: St. Petersburg (Russia), Large Demonstration April 6

The local government has called for a large rally to take place this evening as a memorial event for the victims of Monday's attack at Technological Institute Metro Station. Members of the Legislative Assembly have also called for the event to be considered an "anti-terrorist rally."

Reports from news media indicate Zagorodnyy Prospect will be closed off to traffic from Moscovsky Prospect to Ruzovskay Street from 1600 to 2000 hours, although the event could last well past this time. Similar events are being held this evening in Moscow.

The Consulate General reminds U.S. citizens to avoid public demonstrations and to remain aware of their surroundings and patterns on public transportation services that might indicate that protests are gathering. Metro services may be strained in that area this evening.

U.S. citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
