Qingdao: At least 25 people were killed and five remain missing after a fire erupted on a cargo vessel undergoing repairs at a shipyard in the northeastern Chinese port city of Qingdao, state media reported on Thursday. The cause of the fire, which broke out on the vessel with 42 people on board, remains unclear. According to Deutsche Welle, state broadcaster CCTV reported that the fire on the 190-meter bulk carrier "Ocean Melody," which sails under a Liberian flag, ignited at approximately 11:15 a.m. local time and was extinguished around 2:30 p.m. President Xi Jinping has issued "important instructions" for a search and rescue mission, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to determine any possible responsibility for the incident. The vessel was receiving repairs at Qingdao's Beihai Shipbuilding Co, a part of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), one of the world's largest shipbuilders. President Xi stressed that all regions and relevant departments must draw profound lessons from t his tragedy and thoroughly rectify all types of fire hazards to prevent future occurrences.
