Buchanan: Delivering his 179th Independence Day Address during the official celebration in Buchanan, President Boakai said Liberia's future depends on a clear understanding of its past, declaring, "A nation that understands its history is better prepared to shape its future."
According to African Press Organization, the President stated that the initiative will collaborate with international partners, universities, libraries, archives, and cultural institutions to repatriate copies of historical records relating to Liberia. This effort aims to ensure that Liberians remain central in researching, interpreting, and presenting the nation's history to both its citizens and the global audience.
President Boakai emphasized the importance of Liberians being at the forefront of historical research and presentation. As part of the initiative, he announced plans to modernize the National Archives and the National Museum by improving infrastructure, digitizing records, enhancing preservation systems, and expanding public access. Additionally, he directed the establishment of an intergovernmental technical committee to recommend the restoration and modernization of the Kendeja Cultural Center.
The President further revealed that his administration will revive the National History Project, as recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He assured that the project will be led by professional Liberian historians and scholars, maintaining independence from political influence to ensure that history is not written through a politically convenient lens.
This year's Independence Day celebration was themed "Strengthening National Identity Through Liberian-Led Historical Narratives." President Boakai highlighted that strengthening national identity is crucial to nation-building, urging Liberians to embrace their shared history, celebrate their cultural diversity, and uphold their civic duties as the nation approaches its bicentennial.
He stated that the greatest legacy for future generations is not merely infrastructure or stronger institutions but a confident nation that understands itself. The National Historical Recovery and Repatriation Initiative aims to deepen national unity, promote reconciliation, preserve an accurate historical record, and ensure future generations inherit a fuller understanding of Liberia's rich and complex history.
