Residents Urged to Be Vigilant, Report Suspected Mpox Cases in Busia County

Busia: Residents of Busia County have been urged to be vigilant and report suspected cases of Mpox to the nearest health facilities. Speaking during a stakeholders meeting at a hotel in Busia, the County Disease Surveillance Coordinator Evans Shiraku highlighted that Busia County has recorded 39 confirmed cases since December last year. According to Kenya News Agency, out of the 39 confirmed Mpox cases, three were Ugandan natives treated at Busia County Referral Hospital. Shiraku noted that four new cases had been confirmed in the past week. He emphasized the low level of awareness about the disease within the County and stressed the importance of increased sensitization efforts. Shiraku expressed concern over the absence of reported Mpox cases from the Bunyala, Samia, and Butula Sub-counties, voicing fears that residents in these areas might be suffering in silence. He also mentioned that health officials are conducting observation screenings at gazetted border points, acknowledging that the porous border remains a significant challenge. The County Disease Surveillance Coordinator urged residents to report individuals with abnormal skin rashes to health officers. He also pointed out that some locals are resorting to over-the-counter drugs, traditional herbs, and online prescriptions instead of visiting designated health facilities for treatment. He emphasized the importance of utilizing the screening machine available at Busia County Referral Hospital. Shiraku mentioned that a segment of long-distance truck drivers, considered a high-risk population, are avoiding screenings due to fears of isolation. He reminded residents to continue practicing handwashing as a preventive measure against Mpox. Busia County Health Promotion Officer, Nelson Andanje, called upon stakeholders, opinion leaders, and religious leaders to act as ambassadors in sensitizing locals about Mpox. Busia Deputy County Commissioner Solomon Komen assured that the National Government Administration Officers are prepared to use their robust st ructure to carry out disease sensitization. Komen urged residents to demonstrate patriotism by reporting suspected Mpox cases to the authorities. According to reports from the Ministry of Health, 110 Mpox cases have been confirmed nationwide, with Busia leading in numbers. Other counties with confirmed cases include Mombasa, Nakuru, and Nairobi, among others.
