Amidst Polarizing Global Trends, U.S. B Schools Experience Domestic Demand Rebound

GMAC’s annual survey reveals new shifts in the underlying expectations of applicants

RESTON, Va., Oct. 27, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Across the globe, total applications to graduate business school programs in 2023 dipped by approximately five percent. However, more programs than last year reported growth in their applications—indicating that the drop in applications was not felt evenly, according to an annual survey released today by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). GMAC, a global association representing leading business schools, published findings from the 2023 survey results to provide data and insights to better understand current trends in applications to graduate management education (GME) programs.

Specifically, the decline in applications have centered around those to more selective programs, driving a dip in total global applications while their somewhat selective counterparts reported growth in their applications. Many candidates are still interested in more traditional, competitive full-time programs, but online, hybrid, or evening options were much more likely to report application growth. Interestingly, applicants seeking out top-ranked programs may not necessarily be looking for the same flexibility as the others, but many candidates are more willing to sacrifice prestige for flexibility.

“As post-pandemic attitudes toward work continue shifting and preferences for educational offerings continue evolving, the business school community as a whole is quickly adapting,” said Joy Jones, CEO of GMAC. “From degreed programs to new certificates, concentrations, executive education, and micro-credentials, there is a wealth of options appealing to a wide spectrum of candidates in different stages of career and life. U.S. and regional trends reflect shifts in international and domestic applications.

While flexibility in delivery methods played an important role in driving the global application trends, in the United States, the international and domestic compositions of program volume turned out to be the key drivers behind the growth seen among their GME programs. After several challenging years with the domestic pipeline—especially after applications leveled off following the pandemic—more U.S. programs reported growth in domestic applications than declines in 2023. In fact, besides the increase seen in 2020 related to the pandemic, the number of U.S. programs reporting application growth reached a decade-long high in domestic applications.

While more than half of the programs in the U.S. experienced growth despite a small dip in overall applications, their counterparts in Europe, Asia, and the Pacific Islands were not as fortunate. Most European programs have faced declining applications over the past three years, with a significant drop (13 percent) in total international applications in 2023. Similarly, programs in Asia and the Pacific Islands have experienced two years of relative application declines, but with a pronounced drop (8 percent) in total domestic applications in 2023.

Applications among women continue to stagnate across degree types and regions.

Over the past five years, the share of female applicants in the U.S., Europe, Asia, the Pacific Islands, Canada and Latin America has hovered around two-fifths. Even though GMAC’s Prospective Students Survey indicates that women tend to be more interested in flexible, online, and hybrid programs, the share of women applying to online, hybrid, weekend, and evening programs is still roughly two-fifths. One silver lining lies in the share of women applicants in the executive MBA. While it is comparatively smallest at 32 percent, most of these programs saw growth in their applications from female candidates in 2023.

“It is encouraging to see more women in executive positions pursue advanced business education that could help strengthen them as leaders in the workplace,” said Ana María Zermeño Padilla, director of academic experience and operations of EGADE Business School at Tecnológico de Monterrey and a GMAC Board member. “There is still much work to be done to appeal to women, especially those earlier in their careers, to take advantage of what graduate business degrees, particularly those with online and flexible modules, could offer.”

Applications from underrepresented U.S. populations hit post-pandemic peak and top pre-pandemic levels.

Since 2014, most U.S. GME programs reported either stability or growth in their applications from underrepresented U.S. populations. Similar to broader U.S. and global trends, applications from these candidates surged alongside the pandemic until 2021 and 2022 when a majority of programs reported declines in applications as the pandemic-related increases leveled off. This year’s survey result, however, shows that 47 percent of U.S. programs reported growth in applications from underrepresented U.S. populations, rebounding by a whopping 18 percentage point from a 10-year low in 2022 and even higher than the pre-pandemic years.

“In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on race-conscious admissions, business schools are reexamining their recruitment efforts and admissions strategies to continue enrolling a student body that reflects the diversity of the country and their pool of applicants,” said Sabrina White, vice president of school and industry engagement at GMAC. “As the graduate business school community prepares for impending shifts in how U.S. programs evaluate the experiences of applicants from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds, we hope sharing the data reported by schools over the past decade can help serve as a foundation for how current efforts have – or have not – been effective.”

La plupart des programmes européens ont été confrontés à une baisse des candidatures au cours des trois dernières années, ce qui s’est traduit par une chute importante (13 %) du nombre total de candidatures internationales en 2023. Les programmes d’Asie et des îles du Pacifique ont également connu deux années consécutives de baisse relative du nombre de candidatures, avec toutefois une baisse marquée (8 %) du nombre total de candidatures nationales en 2023.

Les candidatures chez les femmes continuent de stagner, quels que soient le type de cursus et la région.

Au cours des cinq dernières années, la part des candidatures féminines aux États-Unis, en Europe, en Asie, dans les îles du Pacifique, au Canada et en Amérique latine a fluctué autour de deux cinquièmes. Même si l’enquête du GMAC sur les futurs étudiants indique que les femmes ont tendance à être plus intéressées par les programmes flexibles, en ligne et hybrides, la part des femmes qui postulent à des programmes en ligne, hybrides, le week-end et le soir représente toujours environ deux cinquièmes. La proportion de femmes candidates au MBA pour cadres reste une lueur d’espoir. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’un pourcentage relativement faible de 32 %, la plupart de ces programmes ont affiché une augmentation du nombre de candidatures féminines en 2023.

Les résultats de l’enquête de cette année montrent toutefois que 47 % des programmes américains ont connu une augmentation du nombre de candidatures des populations américaines sous-représentées, ce qui correspond à un rebond de 18 points par rapport au niveau le plus bas des dix dernières années, atteint en 2022, et à un niveau encore plus élevé par rapport aux années précédant la pandémie.

Indomitable lions situation worrisome as AFCON draws near

Former Indomitable Lion’s Captain, Benjamin Moukandjo has hit the national team management ahead of AFCON with a declaration seemingly to warn football stakeholders ahead of the next continental football jamboree.

“When you lose 7 games and win only 4, it is insignificant for a team like Cameroon. From my position, I’m not well placed to criticize his balance sheet. If he is still there, it means the Football Federation still trusts him. That is why he has been maintained. If he is still there, it’s maybe because decision makers (Samuel Eto’o) see in him the capacity of righting the wrongs. Let’s trust them, We have an AFCON to prepare,” Benjamin Moukandjo, former indomitable Lion’s Captain and winner of the 2017 AFCON declared.

His declaration as stated by Afrik-foot, comes at a time Cameroonians have been criticizing the performance of the indomitable Lions since Rigobert Song Bahanag took over as head coach.

The team just to recall has recorded just 4 victories in 16 games, lost 7 and drawn 5. A performance judged as below average by pundits, for a team like Cameroon which has just 2 months left to prepare for the 2023 Africa Cup Of Nations to take place in Cote d’Ivoire.

EDITORIAL: Ninth anniversary of CNA: Quality journalism is under autocracy

It is often said that journalism is the Fourth Estate, but what does this mean? The term ‘Fourth Estate’ is often attributed to the Victorian writer, Thomas Carlyle who coined it as a reference to the fact that the press acts as a watchdog to ensure adherence to democratic principles. Without independent journalists, politicians, powerful businessmen, and other ‘elites’ would go unchecked in society, leading only to North Korean-style results where people can be jailed or killed for voicing dissenting opinions.

It is widely agreed among champions of press freedom that the level of press freedom in a country is an indication of how democratic (or undemocratic) that country is. If we are to go by this assessment, then it would be only fair to conclude that Cameroon’s scores over the years on the Press Freedom Index published annually by Reporters Without Borders indicate a worrying trend as Cameroon tends to be near the bottom, often over the 150 mark.

And that is where Cameroon News Agency (CNA) comes in. Our founder Nfor Hanson Nchanji took a bold step as a young reporter two years into the now-bloody Anglophone Crisis and launched CNA with a little over a dozen subscribers when the digital news outlet launched its Facebook page on October 27, 2014. And subsequently extended to other platforms and a Website in 2017, during which it was legalized.

CNA’s existence and commitment to reporting news from the Anglophone regions was timely because the national broadcaster sought to shape the narrative of what was happening in the Anglophone conflict with the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society (CACSC) who were in talks with the government to seek redress for the grievances the Consortium had raised.

CNA subscriptions soared as the publication gave news reports from firsthand sources and focused on human interest stories – a 360-degree turn from what other outlets were doing in the country, tending to focus on press releases from government offices and quoting government mouthpieces without an alternate source. CNA did bold journalism which resonated with the masses.

On February 14, 2020, around 9 AM, CNA published breaking news on more than 20 civilians massacred in Ngarbuh by government forces following multiple explosions. But when this information was released, as usual, government agents and singsong birds, chastised our journalism but sooner or later, when the UN and other NGOs started confirming the unforgettable crimes, CNA was vindicated but NEVER appreciated.

As we clock nearly a decade today, we are not only proud of the achievements we’ve had over the years but also of the challenges (or opportunities as we see them) that still lie ahead of us. We are resolute in telling the side of the Cameroonian story that often gets left out – giving a voice not just to Anglophone Cameroonian audiences, but to all Cameroonians regardless of their linguistic or cultural backgrounds.

We salute not just those who have criticized us over the years and labeled us as ‘pro-Ambazonians’ but also those who’ve given us a pat on the back. We celebrate the few brave reporters who are stationed all over the country and who give their best to file stories for us. We salute all of them for their bravery and for sometimes never getting credit in the form of bylines for their stories because it would mean endangering them by naming them.

Journalism is not a job for the faint-hearted and sometimes, some lose their lives in the pursuit of truth, which is journalism’s ultimate goal. We remember those like Martinez Zogo who only in January this year lost his life in the practice of this noble profession. Samuel Wazizi who was murdered by Government agents whose corpse we never saw, Anyeh Nsoh who was killed by Separatists ( though not in the context of repression) All those who have fled to exile, hiding in the country or have changed their beats because of fear of the unknown.

We are acutely aware that there isn’t much press freedom in Cameroon and that even though we are primarily a digital news outlet, we still have to weigh our words carefully before publishing our stories.

However, we know that 9 years is a long time and we have come a long way. On our 9th anniversary, we can only promise our audience that things will get better. As we started with the creation of a Sports department, we are also unveiling the creation of AFRICA TODAY which has been airing on our page for the past months, and DIASPORA DIARIES which will start airing in two months. Reflections of a CNA Reporter: What is it like working for the outlet?

I joined Cameroon News Agency officially more than a year ago today in the midst of the growing rift between the Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC) and the CBC congregation of Redeemer Baptist Church in Mile Four, Nkwen in Bamenda.

Having been a fervent reader of CNA but not a contributor, I felt that I should not be that one person who has something to offer but prefers to sit on the sidelines, offering nothing more than criticisms. I reached out to CNA executive editor, Nfor Hanson and told him of my interest in working with him. A few phone calls back and forth and he said I was in. I had to turn in 4 articles daily though (sounds easy but trust me, it’s not).

Never mind that I was in the middle of writing my Master’s dissertation at Wits University, Johannesburg. This meant an extra work load, but I was ready to give it my best. I split my time between my Master’s project and my journalism for CNA. Sometimes I was so mentally exhausted I thought I’d crack under the pressure, but like any good journalist, I kept going.

The motivation was often from the encouraging comments our readers would make when we published an article that resonated with our audiences. Some of the articles that stand out to me are the article we published shortly before school resumption in September 2022, urging separatists to allow children to return to school. Most readers lauded us for this because most previously assumed that we were a pro-Ambazonia publication, usually because we lean towards the human interest angle – a big shift of course from how Cameroonian journalism has mostly been practised. Most other outlets act nothing more than mouthpieces for government, never caring to bring their stories closer to home.

Another article we did was the interview with Fuh Denis Zang, the famed comedian of “we must take that cup” expression. It revealed a lot about the comedian’s life which audiences previously were unaware of.

Like I said at the beginning of this article, what thrust me into the limelight with CNA was the story of the rift between the CBC and Redeemer Baptist Church in Bamenda. Our interview with the Rev. Sam Jato of Redeemer, generated mixed reactions (as stories of that nature are bound to do) and we delved further, telling the story in its entirety by reaching out even to the American missionaries who fund Redeemer Baptist and they stated unequivocally that Redeemer is and has always been a church of the CBC and not Rev. Jato’s private property.

Working as a journalist in Cameroon means one always has to be careful especially in my case as a reporter based in Johannesburg and who has to always travel from South Africa to Cameroon. I often reach out to my editor Nfor Hanson and tell him “Man, I am going to Cameroon. Try and call me by this time…and if you don’t hear from me, know that they have probably taken me to Kondengui”. He is usually more optimistic than I am.

Each time I arrive at Nsimalen International Airport and present my passport, I often wait for the worst from the immigration police “Please Mr. Ngala, follow me”. That expression would most likely mean I am on a ‘Wanted’ list someplace but thankfully, our government still has an iota of deceny.

Working for CNA has also opened my eyes to the reality of the power that media has in shaping national discourse and the outcome of political decisions. The current flare-up in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the longest-running conflict in human history – has shown us how the media can sway public opinion on sensitive issues such as conflict. This has made me to weigh carefully how I choose my words – a principle known in journalism as ‘media framing’. I know that calling people either “terrorists” instead of “separatists” determines how they will be perceived by the public and treated by the government. It also indicates that I am not neutral as a journalist but have chosen a side -which actually is not my job. My job as a reporter is to pursue truth and to strive for objectivity. Take note of those two expressions ie “pursuing truth” and “striving for objectivity”. This means that it’s a work in progress. We never quite achieve these two objectives since we are fallible human beings but our journalism makes a deliberate effort to attain it. We don’t just run with one side of a story but try to tell both. We report on casualties from both the military side and the separatist side. When we are not sure of a fact, we make it clear instead of stating it as if it were a fact.

In all, Cameroon has a long way to go with regards to its journalism. Good journalists are highly needed in Cameroon. Don’t do it for the money (because there really isn’t much in it). Do it for the thrill of knowing that you are giving a voice to the ‘voiceless’ – people in remote communities whose stories would otherwise be lost. People with no money to sue the rich and the powerful in court. Do it because you are passionate about holding the powerful to account. And this means you yourself have to have ‘clean’ hands. You can’t take bribes and then come to write against corruption. Do it because journalism is the biggest pillar that holds up the beams of the house of democracy.
