George Mason University is Virginia’s Top University for Social Mobility and a Top 50 National Public University

Fairfax, VA, Sept. 18, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Multiple national college rankings released in recent weeks have placed George Mason University among America’s top 50 public universities, top 100 among all public and private institutions, and Virginia’s No. 1 university for social mobility.

Released today, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2024 rankings puts Mason at #51 among all public universities and #105 among all universities nationwide. Mason retains its top 20 ranking position for innovation and improved to a top 50 (#49) university for veterans, according to these national rankings.

“The rankings are confirming what we here at Mason and Virginians have known for some time; based on our performance, George Mason University is one of America’s top 50 public universities,” Mason President Gregory Washington said. “Further, today’s rankings reflect the value and performance families are looking for from a college education, and Mason’s year-over-year enrollment increases and placement of our graduates confirm that we are now a destination for graduates from Virginia and beyond.”

Overall rankings

Mason is now a top 50 public university in the Wall Street Journal Best Colleges in the U.S. (#33, up from #95) and Forbes America’s Top Colleges (#40). In addition, U.S. News & World Report put Mason in a tie at #51 (up from #64) among public universities, and Washington Monthly National University Rankings ranked Mason 60th among public universities.

Among all universities, both public and private, Mason earns a tied ranking of 105th from U.S. News (up from #137), 95th with the Wall Street Journal (up from #179 in 2021), 93rd with Forbes, and 91st with Washington Monthly (up from #94).

Social mobility

The most significant change in this year’s rankings is the addition of social mobility factors to ranking methodologies, in recognition of growing public demand for more affordable, inclusive, and accessible universities. Mason places No. 1 in Virginia across all rankings that measure social mobility. Among public universities nationwide, Mason ranks #41 with the Wall Street Journal and #34 with Washington Monthly, both for social mobility, and #19 in the New York Times Top U.S. Colleges with the Greatest Economic Diversity.

“All students deserve access to a college education and experience that will deliver on a promise to transform their lives and set them up for lifelong success. Mason delivers in access, innovation, excellence, and opportunity. We are not just in the education business—we are in the success business,” added Washington.

Other national recognitions

These high-profile rankings follow other recent scores that highlight Mason for being one of America’s most inclusive and welcoming universities. FIRE, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, updated its rankings this month, naming Mason No. 8 in the nation for First Amendment observation, up from 17th last year.

Campus Pride also gave Mason its “Best of the Best” designation again for offering safe and welcoming campuses to the LGBTQ+ community, one of just 30 universities in the nation and the only university in Virginia to earn this distinction.

“The measurements of success are starting to change to favor institutions that are more inclusive and less exclusive,” Washington said. “That adjustment is long overdue. Mason is all about helping hard-working students reach their Point B, no matter where their Point A happens to be.”

The university’s total student enrollment has surpassed 40,000 this year, a first for the Commonwealth of Virginia, including the largest freshman class in school history with 4,500 students. Mason’s graduation rates are higher than the national average. In addition, 86% of recent graduates are employed in the greater Washington, D.C. area and 89% in positions related to their career goals.

Currently, about one in four Mason students is in the first generation of their family to attend college, and a slightly higher percentage of Mason students qualifies for Federal Pell Grants, which are awarded to undergraduates with exceptional financial need.

This year, U.S. News also ranked several of Mason’s undergraduate programs in the top 100 nationally, including business, economics, psychology, computer science, and teaching.

Over the years, Mason has been recognized in the numerous college rankings as Virginia’s top public university for diversity, innovation, cybersecurity, homeland security, service to military veterans, and service to students outside the traditional college ages. The Ambassador of Denmark to Nigeria, Mr Sune Krogstrup, has pledged his country’s readiness to invest more and support Nigeria’s quest to develop it’s renewable energy sector.

The envoy made the pledge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said Denmark as a leading global player in the sector was ready to support Nigeria’s green energy transition plan.

“Denmark has a lot to offer Nigeria in terms of green technology and know-how aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“We in Denmark, we are among the global front runners when it comes to developing and implementing new technology, green technology that supports a green transition.

“We are very ambitious in terms of the green transition, the Danish ambition is to make sure to reach climate neutrality by 2050. Nigeria has also committed itself to some very ambitious targets for reducing its emissions.

“And much needs to be done in terms of bringing in investments and technology,” he said.

He underscored the need for Nigeria to take bold steps backed with the political will to implement its Energy Transition Plan (ETP) and meet the net-zero emissions target of 2060.

NAN reports that former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, in August 2022 launched Nigeria’s ETP to provide a blueprint to achieving cabon neutrality by 2060, ending energy poverty and driving economic growth.

“I think that the energy sector is key in this regard. Bold and ambitious steps need to be taken from the Nigerian side if you are to reach the very ambitious targets.

“And of course, Denmark, along with a number of other international partners are ready to support Nigeria on that journey in the form of investments, cooperation and collaboration, government to government,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the national oil company, formerly known as Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, transited fully into a commercial entity in July 2022 to become the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

The official transitioning into a private entity means that the oil company is now being regulated in line with the provisions of the Companies and Allied Matters Act. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Perez Omoun, disclosed this while inspecting the proposed project site for the green house at Degele, Sapele Local Government Area of the state on Monday.

Omoun said that the state government in line with Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori M.O.R.E Agenda, had mapped out three locations for a pilot Green House farm projects across the three senatorial districts of the state.

According to him, Delta Government in partnership with Afritropic has mapped out farm settlements in Degele, Sapele Local Government Area for Delta Central: Mbiri, Ika North East LGA in Delta North and Kpakiama, Bomadi LGA in Delta South Senatorial districts of the state.

He noted that the farms, equipped with modern facilities would be allotted to the youth to engage and empower them, adding that the success of the pilot programme would spur government to inject more funds into the projects.

Omoun said,”the M.O.R.E. Agenda stands for Meaningful development; Opportunity for all; Realistic Reforms and Enhanced Peace and Security.

“Degele is among other two other farm settlements to host one very important scheme that is intended by the M.O.R.E. Agenda to take the youths off the streets.

FCTA to enhance agricultural productivity using innovative strategies – Secretary

The Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) says it will develop innovative strategies to enhance agricultural efficiency and productivity in the federal capital, Abuja.

The Secretary of the secretariat, Mr Lawal Geidam, stated this in Abuja, after receiving briefs from different departments in the secretariat on their operations, achievements, and challenges.

Geidam said that the secretariat would educate and equip residents, particularly the youths, with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate agriculture as a viable business.

“By imparting this knowledge, we hope to empower individuals to engage in agriculture as entrepreneurs, fostering economic growth, and creating employment opportunities in the process,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of synergy among the various departments of the secretariat to achieve the desired results.

The scribe explained that the briefs from the different departments had enabled him to have a comprehensive understanding of their roles and functions.

This, he said, would ensure effective coordination and alignment with common goals in line with the agricultural development agenda of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

According to him, the activities of the departments are interconnected, and their collective efforts are crucial in enhancing food production.

Geidam added that the working synergy would also help in transforming the agricultural sector into a significant source of employment and wealth creation for the growing population.

The secretary pointed out that working in isolation would not lead to the desired outcomes, and stressed the need for collaboration and cooperation among the departments.

“The activities of the departments are interwoven.

“All are geared towards not only boosting food production but making the sector a viable source of job and wealth creation for our teeming population.

“We cannot achieve this in isolation, all the departments must work in synergy to achieve this objective,” he said.

While expressing satisfaction on the progress recorded by the various departments so far, Geidam assured that the challenges were surmountable.

“All we need from you as civil servants is sincerity and diligence in doing your jobs,” he said.

He equally said that he would visit all the agricultural project sites in the FCT, to assess the current state of the projects and identify areas for improvement. (NAN)

Canada to collaborate with Nigeria on gas infrastructure development – Aduda

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mr Gabriel Aduda, says Canada has pledged to collaborate with Nigeria on developing a robust gas infrastructure network.

Aduda said that the Premier of Alberta, Canada, Daniella Smith, gave the assurance at a meeting on Monday with the Federal Government delegation to the 24th World Petroleum Congress (WPC) in Calgary, Canada.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the five-day conference has the theme:”Energy Transition: The Path to Net Zero”.

“One of the things that we have discussed earlier today (Monday) with the Premier of Alberta was fruitful around collaboration to develop our gas assets in Nigeria, especially trunks and distribution pipelines which is something that we need now.

“It is one thing for you to produce the gas and it’s a completely different thing for you to transport the gas to where it is needed and required, and that is something that l think the government of President Bola Tinubu is committed to doing, which is how do we get this gas out where it is needed.

“That is the same massage we have brought, and between now and Friday, we will be meeting with few investors especially those that build the pipelines across Alberta, Canada and America.

“So, we have had discussions and meetings with them to see how they can come back home and help us build our lines,’’ he said.

Aduda said that for Nigeria to be able to deliver on its energy transition plans, it must have strong footings on a three tripod.

According to him, these include financing, technology transfer and infrastructure to meet its net-zero target by 2060.

“We do not need to pressure ourselves into attaining net-zero but rather come up with a framework that works for Nigeria which will allow our resources that we have now take us to where we want to be,” he said.

He said that Nigeria has identified gas as its transition fuel and put the decade of gas ahead as a framework to be able to develop and also ensure the domestic injection of gas in every home, factory and industry.

“The policy is also to ensure distribution across out of Nigeria to feed others because this is a resource we have in abundance, and for us to be able to do that, there is need for huge financial outlay.

‘‘One of the massages we have come with to WPC which we hope we will achieve at the end of the day is to be able to gather investors that will see the business opportunities in Nigeria.

“Investors that will also see that Nigeria is actually ready to do business because the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) has opened the doors that we need in addition to the sector being liberalised so that more players can now come across the world,’’ he said.

On divestment of assets, Aduda said that it was not a bad thing as it is an opportunity from one end to the other.

According to him, the divested assets are a goldmine because it is not as if the assets are left idle but rather, investors are rushing them for takes.

‘‘The truth of the matter is that, once the business place is right, there will always be funding for whatever project you bring in the area of oil and gas.

“So, it’s nothing to be worried about, and at the end of the day all you can see is that this has been taken off by those who think and who can run the process actually.

“So, all we need are capable operators. The moment you are capable, there is no assets that is a waste,’’ he added.

NAN also reports that the 24th WPC has recorded no fewer than 15,000 visitors from over 100 countries, 5,000 delegates and over 200 national and international exhibitors. (NAN)
