New Deido market traders shame hygiene and sanitation personnel for ‘very late’ disinfection

Traders at the New Deido market in the Douala I subdivision have criticized Hygiene and Sanitation personnel of the municipality for their “very late” arrival to disinfect the market area where a truck transporting excrement accidentally emptied its content while ascending the market hill on Monday 4 September 2023. The watery feces collected from a septic tank spilled on food items displayed by traders along the road.

The hygiene and sanitation agents only arrived for disinfection on Wednesday, September 6, three days later.

“It is inadmissible that the excrement spilled here on Monday and disinfection was done three days after by sanitation officials. There are already sick persons as a result of the incident.” A trader said.

According to one of the hygiene and sanitation personnel, Ewane, “the disinfection operation aims at preventing a cholera outbreak and other illnesses which could generate as a result what happened.”

Traders also testified that some vendors along the road whose goods were washed by the feces rinsed them and still sold them.

” There is a woman whose sweet potatoes were washed by the excrement. She sold them after rinsing them with water. Others were selling tomatoes, pepper…”

When the incident happened, the driver and his assistant tried blocking the feces with almost bare hands from coming out of the tank of the truck. This was after traders raised alarm.

“They had used a plastic bag to tie the mouth of the tank. Unfortunately, the pressure as they were ascending caused it to detach. That’s how excreta started flowing from the tank into roadside vendors. The driver and assistant were in a total mess as they both were struggling to seal the mouth of the tank.” Recounted a witness.

The incident came to add to the insalubrious state of the New Deido market coupled with its disorder despite repeated administrative actions to put the traders in order.

Van Gaal’s comments on Messi’s World Cup victory spark outrage

Football actors have distanced themselves from former Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal’s comments, which presume that the Qatar World Cup was rigged in favour of Lionel Messi.

The Argentine superstar led his country to a first-place finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but the Netherlands coach has argued that it was predetermined.

While speaking at the Eredivisie award ceremony on Tuesday night, Van Gaal pointed out that his team’s quarter-final encounter against Argentina was “premeditated”.

“You see, it was 2-2. There was extra time and there was penalties. But when you see how Argentina got their goals, and how we got our goals, and how some players from Argentina overstepped the mark and weren’t punished; Yeah, then I think it was all planned” the coach said.

Netherlands national team players including captain, Vigil van Dijk, have distanced themselves from the coach’s claims.

“He can say what he wants, it’s his opinion, but I do not agree with him and I don’t share the same opinion” the Liverpool defender said.

The coach has insisted that he stands by his word, “I mean everything that I said”.

Lionel Messi scored Argentina’s second goal in the encounter against the Netherlands which ended 4-3 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw.

The South American side later humbled Croatia 3-0 in the semi-final, before inflicting a 4-2 defeat on France in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw in the final.

Messi lifted the World Cup trophy for the first time, with Argentina clinching a third title.

Norway Announces 25 Million USD in Funding to Support Ethiopia’s Forestry Endeavors

The Government of Norway has announced 25 million USD in funding to support Ethiopia’s ambitions, prolonging its decade-long forest partnership with the East African nation.

The Norwegian government announced the funding at the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi to support Ethiopia’s undertakings to avert the impacts of climate change, according to Minister of Planning and Development.

It is noted that forest protection and restoration play a vital role in Ethiopia’s efforts to reduce emissions.

The Ethiopian government has pledged to ensure sustainable use or protection of all remaining forests in the country and to double the forest cover by 2030.

Through the Green Legacy initiative, Ethiopia has planted more than 25 billion seedlings in the first phase of the initiative since 2019. In June, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed disclosed that Ethiopia will have planted a total of 31 billion seedlings by the end of this year’s Green Legacy planting season.

Accordingly, Norway’s forthcoming support to Ethiopia will contribute to scaling up work towards the country’s comprehensive efforts on climate change through forestry.

“I recognize the progress that Ethiopia has made in the forest sector. Large areas of biodiversity-rich forest are now protected from unsustainable use, producing eco-system services that benefit local communities, the country and wider region,” said Climate and Environment Minister of Norway, Espen Barth Eide, on the occasion of the announcement.

It is learned that the new pledge is topping up Norway’s investment of more than 162 million USD to Ethiopia’s forest sector over the last 10 years.

It is also mentioned that the decade-long support has contributed to the protection of one million hectares of natural forests, which are now under sustainable management schemes.

It has also contributed to restoring one million hectares of degraded forests and the establishment of 75,000 hectares of high-value plantation forests.

Some 300,000 livelihoods have been created and enhanced as a result of the partnership, an official report from the Norwegian government indicated.

Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI) was established in 2008 and is the government of Norway’s largest international effort to help combat climate change and preserve nature by protecting the world’s tropical forests.

To achieve this, Norway has entered into bilateral partnerships with several of the most important tropical forest countries in the world, across all three of the largest rainforest basins.

NICFI has invested more than 5 billion USD to protect forests since 2008.
