Limbe I SDF district chair gives back to Community

The Social Democratic Front Limbe I Electoral District Chairman, Ndenge Godden Zama, has made huge donations of Books and other didactic materials to the school-going children in Alpha Club, a quarter in Limbe I.

Over 3000 kids came out in batches at the Alpha Club Junction where the donations were taking place on Monday, August 21.

Books, Mathematics Sets, rulers, pens, and pencils made up the majority of the donations to the kids.

Parents of kids who are currently on holiday and widows residing in and around Alpha Club and Towe were also beneficiaries of the gesture of the SDF Limbe I Electoral District Chairman, Ndenge Godden Zama.

The donations were facilitated by militants of the Party and friends of Zama who came around to help in controlling the endless crowd of kids and parents as well as help in sharing the items.

Speaking to reporters on site, Zama said the period coincided with when he lost his father some two years ago.

“Since I lost my father, it has been a routine that I donate books and didactic materials to kids in my community who may not have enough to go back to school,” The Politician and Real Estate Businessman said.

He added that as someone who likes education and a proprietor of a school, he knows what parents are going through during this period, and helping out in remembrance of his late father was not a bad idea.

Coming at the time when he had declared his candidacy to run for the position of National Chairman of the Social Democratic Front and quizzed if the move was politically motivated, Zama said no.

“This has nothing to do with politics; it is purely humanitarian and should be considered as such.”

He concluded that “it is back to school period and kids, who lack, should be given the chance to feel like those who have resources, it is not yet time for political campaigns, we are not yet there.”

It should be noted that the 38-Year-Old Ndenge Godden Zama is also involved in other community actions such as running a Football Club known as Livanda Lions and also the Chief Executive Officer of Peddy’s Capital.

Gov’t Ready to Take Proper Measures to Halt Contraband, Illicit Trade: PM’s Advisor

Government will boost export trade by taking appropriate legal measures on actors engaging in contraband and illicit trade, Macroeconomic Advisor of the Prime Minister Ambassador Girma Biru said.

Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration held a half-day workshop today to discuss and evaluate the annual export trade performance of the country for the concluded Ethiopian fiscal year with pertinent stakeholders.

During the occasion, the ministry revealed that Ethiopia has secured more than 3.6 billion USD from export trade during the concluded budget year.

The revenue gained during the stated period was 69.79 percent of the target, the ministry said.

Addressing the workshop, Ambassador Girma said that contraband is one of the major challenges of the export trade alongside structural problems.

He further stressed that contraband trade has been one of the major challenges of export trade which needs prior attention to halt its negative impact on the revenue gained from sector.

Khat and livestock exports are the main sectors being affected by contraband trade during the stated period, Girma pointed out.

Praising the export trade of pulses, Girma said such encouraging trend and experiences need to be expanded to other sectors which have registered lower export performance.

Similarly, State Minister of Trade and Regional Integration Kassahun Gofe said that the export revenue for the concluded fiscal year was close to 70 percent of the target despite all the challenges.

He further elaborated that coffee, mines production, and Khat, were among the export items with below the expected performance due to various reasons.

The country plans to earn 5.1 billion USD from export trade in the current fiscal year by taking all pertinent measures to boost the sector, it was indicated.

Over 4.1 billion USD was secured from export trade during same period last year, according to the ministry.

Ethiopia Secures over 3.6 Billion USD from Export Trade

Ethiopia has secured more than 3.6 billion US dollar from export trade during the concluded Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY), according to the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration.

This was revealed during a workshop the ministry held today on performance evaluation of export trade.

The revenue gained during the EFY was 69.79 percent of the target, the ministry said.

Of the 3.64 Billion US dollar, some 2.8 billion USD was secured from exports of agricultural products, accounting 79.45 percent of the total revenue.

The country plans to earn 5.1 billion USD from export trade in the current EFY.

Over 4.1 billion USD was secured from export trade during same period last year, according to the ministry.

Concerted Efforts Stressed to Prevent, Control Trachoma in Easter Africa Region

International Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Prevention and Control Organization stressed the need for a concerted effort to prevent trachoma disease, which is expanding in the Eastern Africa Region.

A continental conference is underway in Arba Minch town of Ethiopia to discuss on the challenges and solutions of lowland and tropical diseases in Africa.

Representative from more than 13 African countries and partner organizations are attending the three day conference.

The conference is expected to deliberate on the activities being undertaken in the prevention and control of trachoma and other tropical diseases, positive achievements, challenges and actions to be taken vital to tackle the problem.

African Director at the International Neglected Tropical Diseases Prevention and Control Organization, Dr. Teshome Gebrie said on the occasion that trachoma is a serious problem that affects people for a long term health predicament.

Noting that the prevention measures carried out over the past 20 years to control the disease have brought some encouraging out comes in Western and Southern Africa regions; however, he said that it was not able to bring similar success in East Africa.

Hence, he stressed the need for a concerted effort to prevent trachoma disease which is expanding in the region.

The Director further mentioned the importance of sanitation, supply of safe drinking water and enhanced public awareness to prevent the disease which has been huge health burden in the region.

He underlined that governments in the region should give a special attention to the prevention of the disease with strong coordination.

Executive Officer of Disease Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Hiwot Solomon for her part recalled that efforts had been carried out to eradicate trachoma from the world by the year 2020.

However, she added that countries in Easter and Southern Africa region failed to achieve the target.

Lack of sanitation, awareness and supply of safe drinking water as well as weak coordination have also been some of the challenges encountered in Ethiopia to tackling the disease, Dr. Hiwot pointed out.

Embassy, Dawro Development Association Ink Agreement to Expand Model Primary School

The Japanese Embassy in Ethiopia has signed a grant contract today for the expansion project of a Model Primary School in Dawro Zone, in the South West Ethiopia Region.

Japan Ambassador to Ethiopia, ITO Takako and Dawro Development Association General Manager Mulugeta Bezabih signed the agreement.

Japan will donate up to USD 76,274 for this project, through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

Japan Ambassador to Ethiopia, ITO Takako said the project signed today will support the construction of one furnished school building with four classrooms and one latrine building for female students in Dawro zone in the region.

Ito added “this project will enable all about 500 students especially female students to study in a proper learning environment.”

Dawro Development Association General Manager Mulugeta Bezabih on his part said Japan has been supporting the Dawro community through its institutions and the association.

Japan has especially been providing support in the education, health and potable water provisions, he noted.

This support to the primary school will improve the learning activity of the students and improve the friendship between the peoples of the two countries, Mulugeta added.
